A Year in Trees by J. C. Raulston and Kim Tripp

This book came out in 1995, and the subtitle is Superb Woody Plants for Four-Season Gardens.

Tripp honed her craft at Harvard's Arnold Arboretum, where she wrote weekly articles for the North Carolina State University Arboretum in Raleigh. Those articles became the backbone of 150 profiles of trees, shrubs, and vines. Tripp's featured plants are pretty low-maintenance and reliable.

Raulston and Tripp point out that just,

"40 species of shrubs and trees make up 90 percent of the landscape plantings in the U.S."

The book is divided into four parts corresponding to the seasons.

This is a terrific resource featuring some under-used but amazing trees and shrubs.
