William Morris's Flowers by Rowan Bain
This book came out in 2019, and the author, Rowan Bain, is the senior curator at the William Morris Gallery.
William Morris, the visionary architect of the Arts and Crafts movement, was a man of many talents. But his passion for flowers truly bloomed into a breathtaking artistic legacy.
Born in 1834 to a wealthy family, William was the leading figure of the Arts and Crafts Movement.
William grew up on the edge of Epping Forest. He played and sketched in the family garden.
At college, he became inspired by John Ruskin and the art and architecture of northern Europe. William ditched a plan to pursue life as a clergyman and started to pursue art.
As industrialization took hold, William sought to counter the advancement of smoke and grime with design and art that celebrated the beauty of medieval times.
A singular talent, William collaborated with artisans, craftsmen, and people from many different trades. Today, his carpet, fabric, and wallpaper patterns remain aesthetically captivating.
The majority of William's work is based on nature and gardens. Trees, plants, and flowers figure prominently in his designs and patterns, serving as the foundation for the intricate patterns that grace his wallpapers and fabrics. William's floral motifs reflect his love of nature and belief in the power of handcrafted beauty.
In this book, Rowan Bain, a seasoned curator at the William Morris Gallery, guides us through William's floral designs.
We also learn about the source of his inspiration: his gardens at the Red House in Kent; sixteenth- and seventeenth-century herbals; illuminated medieval manuscripts; late medieval and Renaissance tapestries; and a range of decorated objects - including artifacts from the Islamic world.
Rowan takes us through this verdant wonderland with a knowledgeable and engaging touch. Her insightful commentary illuminates why William Morris's designs have a timeless appeal and remain popular today.
This book is a feast for the eyes with over one hundred stunning color illustrations. Every page reveals a new floral masterpiece, a testament to William's enduring legacy and designs. Whether you're a seasoned gardener or simply appreciate the beauty of nature, William Morris's Flowers is a must-have addition to your library.
