The White House in bloom: The 1971 American Flower Christmas tree and state flower pride

#OTD On this day in 1971, Mrs. Nixon & Julie Nixon Eisenhower gave the press a tour of the WH Christmas decorations.

The 20-foot Fraser Fir in the Blue Room was decorated as an "American Flower Christmas tree" & featured the State Flowers and State Gems from every state in the union.

State Flowers were a big deal decades ago.

The first January meeting of the Oklahoma Bud and Blossom Flower Club featured "State Flowers for all Fifty States" during their first Monday meeting on January 3rd, 1972.
Mrs. G. C. Gulick presented the program, and members charmingly answered roll call with the name of their home state flower.
