Dearest reader,

On this day, the world welcomed John Banister Tabb, an American poet, Roman Catholic priest, and gifted teacher whose words continue to bud with gentle wisdom.

Born into a wealthy Virginia family, Tabb’s life was as layered and nuanced as the threads of a well-tended garden—plagued by poor eyesight yet flourishing with literary brilliance.

One of my favorite poems by Father Tabb, An Interview, beautifully captures the ephemeral nature of time and memory:

I sat with chill December
Beside the evening fire.

"And what do you remember,"
I ventured to inquire,
"Of seasons long forsaken?"

He answered in amaze,

"My age you have mistaken;
I've lived but thirty days."

How exquisitely this poem reminds us that we might misjudge the fullness of life experienced, much like seasons that may seem brief but are deeply felt.

The chill of December by the fire sets a contemplative tone that any gardener will appreciate during the slower months when the soil rests but the mind wonders.

Tabb also penned a clever little poem that perfectly mirrors the lifecycle of the dandelion, a humble garden denizen with a golden crown and silver regal fading:

With locks of gold today,
Tomorrow, silver-gray;
Then blossom-bald. Behold,
O man, thy fortune told!

In these four crisp lines, the dandelion’s ephemeral beauty becomes a mirror for human fate—a flourish of youth, a silvery maturity, then inevitable decline.

This gardener-poet’s subtle wit and nature-inspired wisdom speak elegantly of life’s fleeting cycles.

Father Tabb, the poet priest, reminds us that poetry, much like a well-loved garden, is both a refuge and a teacher, guiding us through the seasons of the soul with grace and quiet authority.
