Dearest garden reader,

On this day, the world caught a glimpse of a different facet of the luminous Dame Helen Mirren, a renowned English actor and a surprisingly devoted gardener and farmer.

Speaking with Yours magazine, Helen revealed her deep affection for the garden: a refuge where the pull of earth and growth keeps at bay the “dark dragons” we all face at times.

“If I have a few free hours I love to dig around in the dirt. It’s so calming, worthwhile and a really good way of keeping those dark dragons away.”

These words, tender and honest, remind us how gardens often serve as quiet sanctuaries for mental and emotional well-being.

Helen’s passion for gardening extends beyond her backyard's borders. At 74, she and her husband have planted over 400 pomegranate trees at their farm in Salento, Italy, embarking on a new chapter as pomegranate farmers.

She shares:

“Apart from acting, my other job is that of a pomegranate farmer. We’re producing juice for the market. The juice is delicious.

Our little company is still in the early stages but we want to sell our juice in Italy and abroad.”

One can only imagine the sight that moved her to tears—the full moon rising from the sea, bathing her orchard in silver light, the pomegranates glowing beneath its soft gaze. Perhaps it was a moment where art, nature, and life intertwined most perfectly.

Has such a luminous moment ever stirred your soul in a garden or orchard?

Do memories of places where nature and moonlight meet linger long in your heart?

Helen champions not just the personal joys of gardening but its broader significance:

“Gardens and green spaces are vital for people and the planet…

They should teach it in schools…

Gardening is learning, learning, learning.

That’s part of the fun of it.

You are always learning.”

Such a call to nurture both green spaces and curious minds is a reminder that gardens are living classrooms, offering lessons in patience, resilience, and wonder.

May your own hands find calm amid soil and shoots, and may the moonlight ever inspire the gardens you cultivate, whether vast orchards or simple pots on a windowsill. Explore more about Helen Mirren here: (books about this person).

May your gardening journey be ever one of learning, healing, and moonlit wonder.
