Botanical History On This Day
1647 Maria Sibylla Merian was born. Long overlooked, her luminous studies of insects and host plants revealed their intimate interdependence and remain so accurate that modern entomologists still identify species directly from her art.
1513 Juan Ponce de León claimed La Florida for Spain, naming the land for Pascua Florida, the Festival of Flowers.
1819 American Farmer, the first successful agricultural journal in the United States, was published in Baltimore, helping farmers share knowledge across a young nation.
1711 Job Baster, Dutch naturalist and microscopist, was born. A careful observer of shells, plants, and pond life, he later introduced goldfish to the Netherlands and lent his name to the scientific journal Basteria.
Unearthed Words
In her own words, Maria Sibylla Merian describes a ripe pineapple and the butterfly that emerged from a caterpillar she observed with painstaking care, reminding us that patience and attention reveal entire worlds.
