Monologue
How much do you care for your garden?
Do your time and attention stay pretty constant throughout the season?
If not, why not?
What would your garden look like in August if you loved it then as much as you do now?
What must you do to sustain a high level of care for your garden all season long?
Fewer tomato or pepper plants?
More raised beds?
Are you getting regular garden time committed on the calendar?
Are you removing high-maintenance plants?
Botanical History On This Day
1926 Luther Burbank, America’s great plant wizard, died. His passing so moved his friend Paramahansa Yogananda that Autobiography of a Yogi was later dedicated to him as “an American Saint.”
1912 Elsie Elizabeth Esterhuysen, the most extraordinary collector of South African flora, was born. She gathered more than 36,000 specimens while insisting she was merely “filling in gaps.”
1867 John Paulus Lotsy, Dutch botanist and geneticist, was born in Dordrecht. His meticulously gathered herbarium illustrated plant adaptation and morphology rather than mere abundance.
Unearthed Words
April Poetry blooms in Always Marry an April Girl by Ogden Nash, a playful and perceptive ode to the month’s ever-changing temperament.
