Monologue
I ran across a fascinating old journal as I was researching this show and what I especially loved about it was the layout.
If you want to copy it, here's what you do:
- Dedicate a page of your journal to each type of plant in your garden.
- Make some notes about the characteristics of the plant. (Maybe what you like about it as well)
- Then leave room to chart the significant events with the plant.
For instance, after describing Kalmia Angustifolia, it says this:
- June 7, 1908, First Flowers
- June 15th generally comes into bloom
- July 13 Still in flower
- Rarely any flowers in the autumn.
Doesn't that make for a convenient and personal reference guide for your garden?
Botanical History On This Day
1821 Louis Claude Richard, one of the most eminent botanists of his age, died. He was born into generations of royal gardeners, and he scarcely remembered a moment of life untouched by plants. He returned from French Guiana with a herbarium of more than 1,000 specimens.
1769 Daniel Boone first gazed upon the forests of present-day Kentucky, later declaring the land “too crowded” before moving on. His story is a reminder that wilderness forever recedes before human footsteps.
1885 Fletcher Steele, the American landscape architect who designed more than 700 gardens, was born. He later created the iconic Blue Staircase at Naumkeag and redefined plants as compositional elements rather than mere ornament.
1917 Jack Harlan, botanist and tireless advocate for preserving wild crop relatives, was born. He was an early-warner of genetic vulnerability and reminded us that agriculture arose through long coevolution between plants and humankind.
