Monologue

Have you heard of the Little Free Library that some thoughtful people put up out by their sidewalks?

Well, a few weeks ago, I saw a post by Hylton Jolliffe about his Little Free Herbary...

It draws obvious inspiration from the Little Free Library movement. It aims to help us share and connect with neighbors and others who might need herbs for cooking, medicinal remedies, fragrances, etc.

The idea draws obvious inspiration from the wonderful Little Free Library movement. It aims to help us share and connect with neighbors and others who might need herbs for cooking, medicinal remedies, fragrances, etc.

Anyway, I loved Hylton's idea; I think it's just as cute as all get out.

Hylton also has a Facebook group you can join to find out more. Just search for "Little Free Herbary the next time you're on Facebook.

Botanical History On This Day

1812 Karl Theodor Hartweg, a tireless plant explorer, was born. His seven-year journey through the Americas yielded the most comprehensive collection of New World orchids assembled by a single individual in the early nineteenth century.

1969 Edgar Shannon Anderson, American botanist and geneticist, died. He is remembered for advancing plant genetics and for his deeply humane and philosophical approach to botanical study.

2018 H. Y. Mohan Ram, the beloved Indian botanist and educator, died. He left behind a legacy of scholarship, mentorship, and resilience inspired by the natural world.

2019 Great British Gardens premiered with Carol Klein exploring Gravetye Manor, the storied landscape created by William Robinson, one of England’s most influential gardeners.

I am the great grandson of Carl Theodor Hartweg. How you see, is his correctly christian-name CarlTheodor and not Karl Theodor or Karl. The name of the inventor of the automobile is also Carl Benz and not Karl Benz. In english speaking countries he was often called only Theodore. But there are also a lot of other mistakes in your article. The man on your picture is also not my great grandfather. I myself own the only photograph of him.

You are correct. Most of the textbooks and online references refer to him as Karl Theodor and not CarlTheodor – which was his Christian name.
I understand your frustration as I have many ancestors with Christian names that were lost to time.
