International Coffee Day celebrates the evergreen coffee shrub and a native to the Bean Belt near the equator and legendary for its energizing discovery by an observant Ethiopian goatherd.

Botanical History On This Day

1860 Jens Jensen, the “Dean of Landscape Architects,” died on this day. Known as the prairie poet, conservation pioneer, and designer of public spaces, he believed forests offered peace and trees enjoyed each other’s company.

1874 LeRoy Abrams, California plant collector and beloved teacher, was born. He crisscrossed the West to document its flora and dreamed of an illustrated flora inspired by the great works of the New York Botanical Garden.

1887 John & Harvey Ruth rowed to what is now Lynn Island in the Delaware River to collect fall flora—finding the island awash in asters and butterfly weed.

1891 Cyrus M. Tracy, self-taught botanist and champion of Lynn Woods near Boston, was remembered in print on this day. He was hailed for protecting “an asylum of inexhaustible pleasures” for generations to come.

1916 California State Flower Day was celebrated, honoring the California poppy. The flower was named a century earlier by Adelbert von Chamisso in a gesture of botanical friendship.
