National Pumpkin Seed Day celebrates pepitas—ancient, protein-rich seeds native to the Americas (and still marvelous for “no-fuss” snack bars when autumn appetites arrive).
Botanical History On This Day
1832 Julius von Sachs, German botanist and “Father of Plant Physiology,” was born. He pioneered early nutrient experiments that foreshadowed hydroponics and clarified how light and chlorophyll drive the green engine of life.
1836 The HMS Beagle Returns to England after five years at sea, bringing a young Charles Darwin home with crates of specimens—and the beginnings of an idea that would eventually change how the world understands life.
1854 Patrick Geddes, botanist and father of town planning, was born. He insisted that cities must grow with nature, not against it, and reminds us that the world is “mainly a vast leaf-colony.”
1871 Martha Brookes Hutcheson, one of America’s first professional female landscape architects, was born. She wrote The Spirit of the Garden and advocated for gardens and trees as essentials of everyday life, not luxuries for the few.
Unearthed Words
Remembering poet Wallace Stevens—insurance man by day, garden-minded philosopher by night—whose lines linger like rose scent on an evening walk.

1940 An “Old Mother Nature” line reminds us that every stick and stone carries a story—and a 1875 Chicago Tribune snippet insists plants need rest, darkness, and (most of all) love.
