Botanical History On This Day
1773 John Clayton, colonial botanist of Virginia, was born. He was the creator of one of America’s earliest botanical gardens at Windsor and a key contributor to Flora Virginica, compiled with the guiding hand of Linnaeus himself.
1778 Joseph Knight, gardener, nurseryman, and indefatigable sponsor of plant exploration, was born. He is remembered for Knight’s Exotic Nursery, a showroom so elegant it dazzled visitors and reshaped English taste for rhododendrons, azaleas, and rare exotics.
1805 Robert Brown returned to England after four years in Australia, bringing with him thousands of new plant species and beginning a career that would place him at the center of botanical science and the Banks herbarium.
1868 Cornell University welcomed its first students to the hills above Cayuga Lake—an agricultural land-grant institution founded on Ezra Cornell’s belief in education “for any person,” gardens included.
Unearthed Words
