Botanical History On This Day
1620 John Evelyn, English gardener, diarist, and author of A Discourse of Forest Trees, was born—an early and eloquent advocate for tree planting, salads, and the moral virtues of gardening.
1795 John Keats, the Romantic poet whose garden walks inspired Ode to a Nightingale and Ode to Autumn, was born—leaving behind verses steeped in fruitfulness, bees, and mellow light.
1815 Andrew Jackson Downing, American horticulturist and founding voice of landscape architecture, was born—the visionary who dreamed of Central Park and a living museum of trees.
1895 Richard Morris Hunt, Gilded Age architect and collaborator with Frederick Law Olmsted, died—best remembered by gardeners for shaping the grandeur of the Biltmore Estate.
1913 Charles Totty, florist, rose breeder, and champion of American flower shows, was honored for his rose ‘Shell Pink Shawyer’ and his belief that flowers should never be given away lightly.
