1714 William Shenstone, the poet and landscape gardener who created the famed ornamented farm known as The Leasowes, was born.
1806 Charles Leo Lesquereux, the Swiss-born American bryologist who partnered with William Starling Sullivant to define American mosses, was born.
1810 Asa Gray, Harvard botanist, co-author of Flora of North America, and early advocate of Darwin’s theory of natural selection, was born.
1960 Kim Wilde, pop singer turned award-winning gardener, was born.
