1678 Jean-Jacques d'Ortous de Mairan, the French chronobiologist who proved plants keep a daily rhythm by observing Mimosa pudica opening and closing its leaves in total darkness.

1810 Henry Winthrop Sargent, creator of the famed Hudson River estate Wodenethe and reviser of Downing’s Landscape Gardening, who framed vistas like living paintings.

1808 John Lewis Russell, Unitarian minister, botanist, and beloved field companion of Emerson and Thoreau, whose enthusiasm for ferns, grasses, lichens, and mosses inspired generations of nature lovers.

1879 Ferdinand Jakob Lindheimer, the Father of Texas Botany, who collected nearly 100,000 specimens and lent his name to many Texas plants.
