As we welcome the new year, here's a nod to a handful of the plant discoveries made in 2019. @Kew scientists officially named 102 plants & 8 fungi in 2019 - including a shrub that oozes superglue and cancer-fighting fungi. A new species of Snowdrop was spotted on #Facebook!
Botanical History On This Day
1887 Thomas Moore, gardener, naturalist, fern-mad curator of the Chelsea Physic Garden, and source of beloved maxims like “Garden as though you will live forever,” died on this day.
1895 Cythna Letty, South African botanical artist whose life’s work captured her country’s wildflowers gracing both scientific plates and national coins, was born.
1931 Martinus Beijerinck, the Dutch botanist who uncovered a “contagious living fluid” in diseased tobacco and gave the world the word “virus,” died.
1944 Sir Edwin Lutyens, the architect known as Ned, whose partnership with Gertrude Jekyll reshaped the English country garden and whose houses still grace the pages of Country Life, was born.
