827 Saint Adelard of Corbie, Charlemagne’s cousin and patron saint of gardeners, is remembered for tending his Abbey plots so humbly that artists still show his abbot’s crown set aside in the soil at his feet.

1735 Carl Linnaeus Goes A-Courting in full Lapp costume, beginning the love story with Sara Lisa Moraea that runs alongside his other great ordering of the world: binomial nomenclature and his beloved twinflower, Linnaea borealis.

1813 Don Francisco de Paula Marin, trusted advisor to King Kamehameha I, planted Hawaii’s first pineapple and went on to introduce vineyards and coffee, earning his place as “Hawaii’s Original Farmer.”

1831 John Gill “J.G.” Lemmon, Civil War survivor turned botanist who botanized the West with his wife Sara on their “botanical wedding trip,” was born; Mount Lemmon in Arizona still bears her name in honor of their shared ascent.

1899 Rhodora, the New England Botanical Club’s journal devoted to North American flora, published its first issue and began its long life as a botanical staple for working plant lovers.
