Gardening: Going blue for 2020

The Pantone color of the year for 2020 is Classic Blue. Here's a great post from Nancy Szerlag Detroit News who suggests blue options for the garden:

"If I were to look for that color to use in the garden, my first thought would be a Delphinium. Nigella ‘Miss Jekyll' produces exquisite quarter-sized blue flowers on 15-inch plants in full to part sun in late spring or early summer. They are said to reseed annually, so I’m hoping a one-time planting of seed will do the job.

A favorite blue flowering shrub of mine is Proven Winners Color Choice ‘Blue Chiffon’ Rose of Sharon. In full sun, it will climb to 10 feet and be covered in lovely anemone-like blossoms for several weeks in summer."

Georgianna Lane's new book, Paris in Bloom, features charming images of parks, gardens, shops, and architectural motifs, a vision of Romance and Spring - the perfect gift for Valentine's Day.

Botanical History On This Day

1685 George Clifford III, the Dutch banking magnate and plant collector whose estate became Carl Linnaeus’s living laboratory and the subject of Hortus Cliffortianus, was born.

1715 Mary Somerset, Duchess of Beaufort, fearless plantswoman, botanical patron, and ancestress of Princess Diana, died, leaving her treasured herbarium to her neighbor Sir Hans Sloane and her name to the genus Beaufortia.

1784 David Landreth founded America’s first commercial seed company in Philadelphia, later introducing treasures like the garden tomato, Mexican zinnia, and ‘Bloomsdale’ spinach.

1848 Ignatz Urban, German botanist and curator of the Berlin Botanical Garden, who helped catalog the floras of the Caribbean and Brazil, and is now buried among fellow botanists there, was born.
