Japan's winter peonies (kan-botan) - IKIDANE NIPPON

Check out Japan's winter peonies. They aren't allowed to flower in the Spring/Summer and are forced to bloom in winter. Each peony is covered with a little straw tent. Kan-botan (寒牡丹) or Fuyu-botan (冬牡丹) means “winter peonies.”

Andre Baranowski's Garden Wild - Flower Magazine

New Book: Andre Baranowski’s Garden Wild.

One garden features Jorge Sánchez, who transplanted slash pine stumps from Florida and added mosses. Ingenious.

Botanical History On This Day

1802 Catherine Parr Traill, the resilient Canadian-English writer and “botanist of the Backwoods,” who turned hardship, wildflowers, and emigration into classic works like Backwoods of Canada and Canadian Wildflowers, was born.

1857 Elizabeth Gertrude Knight Britton, formidable bryologist, co-founder of the New York Botanical Garden, and conservationist whose sharp wit (and moss cabinet) inspired Elizabeth Gilbert’s fictional botanist in The Signature of All Things, was born.

2004 The Beatrix Farrand Society purchased Garland Farm in Maine to preserve Beatrix Farrand’s final home and garden and to foster ongoing study of her elegant, architecturally-minded landscape design.

1969 “I Heard It Through the Grapevine” by Marvin Gaye hit #1 on the charts, proving that even in pop music, the most irresistible news still travels—quite literally—along the grapevine.

Catherine Parr Traill’s “More Poons”, a tender tale of her young son Willie secretly planting the family’s heirloom silver spoons in the garden, hoping they would grow into “more poons,” turning loss into a story forever rooted in the soil of the backwoods.
