Great Dixter's Head Gardener, Fergus Garrett, On Conifers | House & Garden
Great post from @_houseandgarden about "Why the Conifer is Having a Comeback."
"Conifers do not have to be plonked in island beds with gaudy heathers, or peppered around Seventies-style rockeries like missiles...
Their range is mouth-watering, adding form and texture with a twist."

Botanical History On This Day
1501 Leonhart Fuchs, German botanist whose monumental herbal Historia Stirpium described New World crops like corn, pumpkins, and chili peppers, was born; the genus Fuchsia is named in his honor.
1560 Gaspard Bauhin, Swiss botanist and forerunner of Linnaeus, was born; he used binomial names and formally described the rutabaga, a true turnip–cabbage cross.
1705 John Ray, “The Father of English Botany,” died; he coined terms like petal and pollen, traveled Europe cataloging plants and animals, and wrote the foundational Historia Plantarum.
1890 Peter Henderson, Scottish-American plantsman and “Father of American Horticulture,” died; his books Gardening for Profit and Gardening for Pleasure shaped generations of market gardeners and home growers.

Today's Botanic Spark
1989 David Wheeler’s Hortus launched as a tactile, old-world journal of garden writing “for gardeners who read and readers who garden,” a lovingly analog quarterly that still arrives, ink on paper, for those who savor words as much as plants.
