How to sow micro-leaves & sprouting seeds - The English Garden

The English Garden @tegmagazine shared this great post about growing sprouts. Want a quick, tasty crop any time of year?

Micro-leaves and sprouting seeds are the answer. You don’t even need any special equipment! This is an excellent introduction to microgreens from @tegmagazine.

Botanical History On This Day

1822 John Drayton, two-time governor of South Carolina, founder of the University of South Carolina, and author of The Carolinian Florist, died after a life spent cataloging the flora of his beloved state, including the fragrant yellow honeysuckle on Paris Mountain.

1832 Édouard Manet, French modernist painter and gardener at Gennevilliers, was born; he grew and painted voluptuous peonies that perfectly suited his loose, expressive brushwork.

1862 Agoston Haraszthy, the Hungarian nobleman who became “The Father of California Viticulture,” brought 1,400 grape varieties from Europe to Sonoma’s Buena Vista and helped launch California wine.

1866 Peter Joseph Lenné, Prussian landscape architect, director of the royal botanic gardens in Berlin and Potsdam, and champion of the English landscape style in Germany, died, leaving behind over 100 designed parks and gardens.

2009 Gutierrezia elegans was reported in The Denver Post after retired professor Al Schneider and CSU botany student Peggy Lyon discovered the elegant Lone Mesa snakeweed, a new species in the sunflower family.

Unearthed Words

A crisp little January portrait from John Updike, where snow, low sky, and “trees’ black lace” frame a month of short days and purring radiators.
