Botanical History On This Day
1708 Georg Dionysius Ehret, the German-born gardener-artist who became London society’s most sought-after botanical illustrator and Linnaeus’s greatest visual collaborator, was born.
1781 Adelbert von Chamisso, the Romantic poet, naturalist, and botanist on the Rurik expedition who named the California poppy (Eschscholzia californica) and collected thousands of plants worldwide, was born.
1847 Yerba Buena Becomes San Francisco, as the little settlement named for a “good herb” mint was officially renamed, soon to become a city that countless writers claimed was as close to heaven as earth could manage.
1878 Louise Beebe Wilder, the influential American garden writer who championed color theory, moonlight gardens, and rock gardening with her brisk, opinionated prose, was born.
