1906 Melvin Bergeson & the Red Splendor Crab, the Fertile, Minnesota, nurseryman whose hardy Red Splendor crabapple became a beloved ornamental and winter food source for wildlife, was born.

1920 The American Iris Society was founded with an initial 60 members, launching a century-long mission to celebrate and advance the “flower of the rainbow.”

1965 Isabella Preston, Canada’s first professional woman plant breeder, famed for her lilies, lilacs, and practical rock garden advice, died in Ottawa.

1990 Hazel Schmoll, Colorado botanist and conservationist who championed the Rocky Mountain Columbine and the protection of wilderness, died.

2005 Horace Hagedorn, marketing mastermind behind Miracle-Gro and generous philanthropist who urged gardeners to give back to the earth, died.
