Botanical History On This Day
1778 Augustin Pyramus de Candolle, the Swiss botanist who launched a four-generation botanical dynasty, named hundreds of plants, and helped give Geneva its great botanical garden, was born.
1847 Henri Dutrochet, the French botanist and physiologist who discovered and named osmosis and linked chlorophyll to plant respiration and photosynthesis, died.
1879 John H. Heinz and Vegetable-Assorters received a patent for improvements to machines that sorted fruits and vegetables—an industrial nod to the humble art of grading produce.
1912 Lanning Roper, the American-born landscape architect, romance-seeking border-maker, and author of Successful Town Gardening, who made England his home, was born.
