Botanical History On This Day
1799 John Lindley, the British botanist who saved Kew Gardens and became the namesake of the Lindley Library, was born.
1806 The Douglas-fir, “Fir No. 5,” was described by Meriwether Lewis, who later sketched its distinctive bracted cone.
1806 Friedrich Welwitsch, Austrian botanist and discoverer of the astonishing Welwitschia mirabilis, was born.
1896 The New England Botanical Club was founded by seven professionals and ten amateurs dedicated to studying New England flora.
1935 James van Sweden, pioneering landscape architect and co-creator of the New American Garden style, was born.
