Starting Seeds: Use What You Have - Lewis Ginter Botanical Garden | Jonah Holland

"If you have seeds that are less than three years old, at least some of them should be viable.

You could also use avocado seeds, citrus seeds, seeds from dates. You could try anything you happen to have — peppers, squash, beans, or maybe even pineapple!

Mail ordering seeds is another option. We asked our horticulturist some of their favorite seed sources, and here are a few of our favorites: Johnny's Select Seeds, White Flower Farm, Peace Tree Farm and Prairie Moon Nursery. You might even have a really fun time exploring the Seed Saver Exchange."

My COVID-19 Renee's Garden Seed Order for the Cabin

I share the seeds I ordered after planning to ride out the first wave of the COVID-19 pandemic at the cabin.

Botanical History On This Day

1814 John Lineback, inventor and agricultural pioneer of Salem, North Carolina, received a patent for the first cottonseed hulling machine, paving the way for cottonseed oil and modern disc hullers.

1840 William Ralph Meredith, Ontario Chief Justice and architect of the “Meredith Principles” of workers’ compensation, delighted in gardening at his Rosedale estate, straw hat on, dandelion fork in hand.

1867 Elmer Ivan Applegate, pioneering Oregon botanist and authority on trout lilies (Erythronium), was born near Ashland and grew up botanizing the 5,000-acre family ranch.

1880 Muriel Wheldale Onslow, English biochemist and botanical artist whose work on snapdragon flower color helped establish genetics and pigment biochemistry, was born.
