Botanical History On This Day

1838 George Edward Post, an American missionary doctor and botanist who wrote the first English-language Flora of the Middle East while plant-hunting on horseback in Syria, was born.

1805 Hugo von Mohl, a German botanist who discovered chloroplasts, described cell division, and coined the word “protoplasm,” was born.

1927 Peter Cundall, beloved Tasmanian gardener and organic host of Gardening Australia, whose childhood vegetable patch atop an air raid shelter began a lifetime of cultivation, was born.

1940 Wangari Maathai, Kenyan ecologist, Nobel Peace Prize laureate, and founder of the Green Belt Movement, which planted millions of trees for peace and livelihood, was born.
