Botanical History On This Day
1846 Marian Farquharson, British naturalist and moss-and-fern specialist whose relentless petitioning finally opened the doors of the Linnean Society to women, though she herself had to wait four more years to be admitted.
1877 Herman Hesse, a German Nobel laureate, whose luminous prose about trees turned them into sanctuaries and philosophers for generations of readers.
1893 Ralph Hancock, Welsh landscape gardener and architect who carried romance skyward with his visionary 1930s “Garden of Nations” rooftop garden at Rockefeller Center.
1908 Kate Brandegee, an indomitable California botanist who casually planned a 52-mile botany walk from Placerville to Truckee at age 64 and, with her husband Townshend, rebuilt San Francisco’s botanical collections after the earthquake.
1917 Cordelia Stanwood, the “Bird Woman of Ellsworth,” who braved black flies and swamps to capture exquisite bird photographs like her famed “Six Little Chickadees.”
2018 NASA’s ECOSTRESS berthed at the International Space Station, beginning its mission to read plant temperatures from space to understand drought stress and water use across the globe.
