1817 Adam Kuhn, American physician and naturalist, the only known American student of Linnaeus, for whom the plant Kuhnia (False Boneset) was named, and later the first professor of medicine in the colonies.
1826 Sir Stamford Raffles, who described the colossal corpse flower Rafflesia arnoldii, a leafless, rootless, stemless marvel that can span a yard across and weighs up to fifteen pounds.
1838 William Robinson, fiery Irish gardener, writer, and champion of the wild garden, whose advocacy for naturalistic planting and herbaceous borders helped move Britain beyond stiff, formal designs.
