Botanical History On This Day
1730 Elijah Fenton, English poet, translator of The Odyssey with Alexander Pope, and author of “Ode to Spring” and “Variety of Nature,” died.
1796 Camille Corot, the French landscape painter whose tender reflections on nature inspired the Impressionists and resonate deeply with gardeners, was born in Paris.
1907 Orville Redenbacher, USDA scientist and co-creator of the light, fluffy “snowflake” hybrid popcorn that made his name a household word, was born.
