Heights Garden Club: Hosting a Successful Tour During a Pandemic Part 1 | Ravenscourt Gardens

Botanical History On This Day

1853 Central Park Legislation passed, paving 778 acres for Olmsted & Vaux’s democratic landscape—a gathering place inspired by Paxton’s Birkenhead and later home to Strawberry Fields.

1945 Maine’s State “Flower” became the White Pine Cone and Tassel—an evergreen emblem chosen for endurance and history, the lone U.S. floral symbol without a bloom.

1960 Edith Wilder Scott, heiress-horticulturist of Todmorden Farm and founder of the Scott Arboretum at Swarthmore, died; her gardens of lilacs, iris, peonies, and rhododendrons continue to teach by example.
