Botanical History On This Day

1662 John Evelyn, English gardener-writer and diarist, met the dowager Queen Henrietta Maria; the salad-loving author of Acetaria later saw his beloved garden ravaged by Peter the Great’s rowdy entourage—proof that a gardener’s work (and heartbreak) is never at an end.

1815 Andrew Jackson Downing, the visionary editor of The Horticulturist and early champion of Central Park and a tree-rich National Mall, died tragically after a steamboat fire—his landscape ideals living far longer than his 36 years.

1996 Roger Tory Peterson, naturalist and creator of the modern field guide, passed away; his keen notes—“purple finch: a sparrow dipped in raspberry juice”—taught generations to truly see birds.

Today's Botanic Spark

2011 Bill Cullina’s Perfect Pause — With weeds at bay and 29,000 new plants settling in, Cullina savored that brief mid-season stillness; years later, he would lead the Morris Arboretum, carrying that quiet joy into public gardens.
