Botanical History On This Day
1957 Arthur Shurcliff, the Landscape Architect who redefined Colonial Williamsburg through his meticulous and historically faithful garden restorations, died on this day.
1972 Gilbert L. Campbell, an orchidist who grew over 300 orchids in two greenhouses, shared his wisdom for growing these temperamental beauties in The Greenville News.
2013 Mavis Batey, the WWII codebreaker who later became one of Britain’s leading garden historians and conservationists, died at age 92.
