What to Plant in a Winter Garden | Seattle pi | Rita R. Robison

Botanical History On This Day

1714 William Shenstone, poet and landscape gardener, shaped his farm “The Leasowes” into a pioneering ornamented landscape—complete with views, poems, and resting benches for guests.

1806 Charles Leo Lesquereux, Swiss-American bryologist, overcame deafness to co-author the foundational works on American mosses with W.S. Sullivant.

1810 Asa Gray, Harvard botanist and early advocate of Darwin, helped usher American botany onto the world stage and co-wrote Flora of North America.

1843 Cranberry Craze—reports of booming demand and Michigan barrels racing east marked a ruby-red moment in America’s seasonal produce lore.
