Botanical History On This Day
1850 Alfred, Lord Tennyson, beloved Victorian poet, is remembered by gardeners for the line, “If I had a flower for every time I thought of you… I could walk through my garden forever.” His restored Isle of Wight home and walled garden welcome visitors still.
1895 Calvert Vaux, co-designer of Central Park and Prospect Park, died after a foggy morning walk; the landscape architect who aimed to “translate democratic ideas into trees and dirt” left America’s most iconic greenswards.
1934 Elizabeth Lawrence wrote her sister about zinnias, winter beds, and the “beautiful and sad” fall of leaves—an intimate glimpse of a writer who found as much poetry in November as in June.
1937 Julia Wilmotte Henshaw, Canadian botanist and “Gentle Julia” of the Vancouver Sun, passed away; her columns celebrated wild mushrooms, fruits of the field, and gardens bravely blooming into late November.
