Botanical History On This Day

1748 Isaac Watts, the “Godfather of English Hymnody,” passed away. His beloved hymn “We Are a Garden Walled Around” still delights gardeners with its imagery of enclosed grace and divine cultivation.

1880 Leonard Woolf, British political theorist, writer, and gardener — and husband of Virginia Woolf — was born. Leonard designed and tended the garden at Monk’s House, the couple’s cherished country refuge.

1816 Francis Chantrey, English sculptor renowned for “The Sleeping Children” memorial in Lichfield Cathedral, passed away. His tender work immortalized two young sisters holding snowdrops — a sculpted symbol of innocence.
