1678 Jean-Jacques d'Ortous de Mairan, French geophysicist, astronomer, and chronobiologist, is born. He demonstrated the circadian rhythm in plants through his famous *Mimosa pudica* experiment.
1906 George Ellwanger, German-American horticulturist and co-founder of Mount Hope Nursery in Rochester, New York, passed away, leaving behind a city transformed into a living arboretum.
1915 W. Atlee Burpee, founder of the Burpee Seed Company and pioneer of modern mail-order gardening, died just two days after Thanksgiving.
