Botanical History On This Day
1791 Martha Ballard — midwife and herbalist of Hallowell, Maine — noted in her journal, “My daughter Hannah is very unwell this evening. I gave her some Chamomile & Camphor.” Chamomile soothed, camphor healed, and her 27-year diary preserved the roots of American folk medicine.
1823 Nathanael Pringsheim — German botanist and founder of algology — advanced our understanding of algae and fungi, showing how they live and reproduce. He later founded the German Botanical Society in 1882.
1835 Mark Twain — whose humor often bloomed from garden imagery — wrote in a hilltop octagonal shed overlooking the Chemung River. It’s now preserved at Elmira College. “Climate is what we expect; weather is what we get,” he quipped — as true in the garden as in life.
Unearthed Words
Charlotte Fiske Bates
“Although the heart is very sore from loss,
Yet there are healing powers;
It eases much the burden of a cross
To cover it with flowers.”

Today’s Botanic Spark
1874 Lucy Maud Montgomery — creator of Anne of Green Gables — was born on Prince Edward Island. Gardening was her solace: “To potter with green growing things… is like taking a hand in creation.” Her faith was rooted in her garden — “the substance of things hoped for.”
