Botanical History On This Day

1788 André Michaux crosses the Tugalo River and notes yellowroot, rhododendron, mountain laurel, hydrangea, and hemlock—his first sighting of Rhododendron minus, a plant perfectly suited to Southern gardens.

1841 Botanist Theodor Vogel falls ill with dysentery during the Niger expedition and laments trying to preserve plant collections on a damp man-of-war without Wardian cases—an early plea for better support for field naturalists.

1893 Physicist John Tyndall dies; remembered for explaining why the sky is blue (Tyndall scattering) and for key work linking atmospheric gases and heat—science every gardener admires under a brilliant blue sky.

1903 Edwin C. Jellett’s final Germantown column appears, blending local history with botany and closing with seasonal plant lists—now digitized thanks to Awbury Arboretum.
