Botanical History On This Day
1817 Edward Tuckerman, American botanist and lichenologist, was born. He explored the White Mountains, helped found the Natural History Society of Boston, and rescued the Lewis and Clark specimens that now reside at the Academy of Natural Sciences.
1822 William Saunders, first horticulturist of the USDA and designer of the Gettysburg Soldiers’ National Cemetery, introduced the seedless navel orange to California—every navel orange in the world descends from his cuttings.
1893 Phipps Conservatory opened its gleaming glass doors in Pittsburgh, a gift from Henry Phipps, Jr. Stocked with over 8,000 plants from the Chicago World’s Fair, the conservatory remains a horticultural jewel 125 years later.
