1730 Jan Ingenhousz, the Dutch physician who proved plants make oxygen in sunlight and laid the foundation for photosynthesis, was born.
1800 David Don, Scottish botanist, Linnean Society librarian, and King’s College London’s first botany professor, was born; he died at 41 after a brilliant, book-filled career.
1841 Judge James Harvey Logan, California gardener who accidentally crossed blackberry and raspberry to give us the loganberry, was born.
