Botanical History On This Day
1830 Emily Dickinson, the reclusive poet once “known more widely as a gardener than as a poet,” was born. Her carefree Amherst garden, later tended by her sister Lavinia, was a living expression of her lyric freedom.
1909 Japanese Cherry Trees—2,000 trees arrived in Seattle, a gift from Tokyo for First Lady Helen Taft’s beautification project. Infested and burned, they inspired America’s first plant quarantine laws and a later, flawless gift of 6,000 trees in 1912.
1911 Sir Joseph Dalton Hooker, Victorian botanist, explorer, and Kew Gardens director, died at 94. Darwin’s confidant and champion, Hooker, united botanic gardens worldwide and famously wrote, “Life is short, and books are long.”
