Botanical History On This Day

1843 Jacob Schneck, the Illinois physician-botanist who discovered the Schneck Oak (Quercus schneckii), died after serving his patients through pneumonia—his life a blend of compassion, curiosity, and quiet heroism.

1855 Henry David Thoreau recorded his winter walk through Holden Swamp, marveling at the Lesser Redpolls whose crimson wings and cheerful feeding proved that “the winter… is as it was designed and made to be.”

1911 Victor Lemoine, French hybridizer of lilacs, peonies, mock-oranges, begonias, and more, died. His Nancy nursery and devoted wife Marie Louise gave the world the first double lilac and hundreds of floral treasures.
