Botanical History On This Day
1843 John Claudius Loudon, the Scottish garden designer, prolific writer, and coiner of “arboretum,” died. Known for his love story with Jane Loudon and the hilarious “Waterloo Breeches” mix-up, Loudon shaped Victorian horticultural thought.
1910 Richard Hale Goodwin, American botanist, conservationist, and founder of Connecticut College’s Human Ecology program, was born; his 1,200-acre East Haddam preserve remains a thriving ecological legacy.
