Botanical History On This Day
1770 Ludwig van Beethoven, baptized on this day, found profound inspiration in nature—his “Pastoral” Symphony a musical day in the country—and even penned his “Moonlight Sonata” at an estate later famed for roses.
1858 Charles F. A. Morren, Belgian botanist who revealed vanilla’s pollination (and inspired hand-pollination), coined “phenology,” and chronicled horticulture in La Belgique Horticole, died.
1901 Rachel Peden, Indiana columnist and nature writer (“Mrs. RFD”), was born; her books and columns celebrate farm life, seasons, and the solace of the garden.
