Botanical History On This Day
1829 Jean-Baptiste Lamarck, French naturalist who outlined an early theory of evolution and quietly preserved Paris’s Jardin du Roi by renaming it “The Garden of Plants,” died in Paris.
1930 “Bathrooms like Gardens”—The Boston Globe noted Lady Cromer’s iris-themed bath, walls painted with riverbank blooms so the tub became the “river” itself.
1958 Oregon’s 700-Year-Old Sitka Spruce was saved for a public tree-farm park in Seaside; at 195 feet tall and over 15 feet in diameter, it rivaled the nation’s champions.
2018 David Austin, beloved rose breeder and author (from ‘Constance Spry’ onward), was remembered for reviving old-rose charm—“roses of fragrance and character”—for modern gardens.
