Botanical History On This Day

1835 David Hosack, physician-botanist who founded America’s first public botanic garden in Manhattan (later the site of Rockefeller Center), died at 65 after training generations of doctors with living plant collections.

1880 George Eliot (Mary Ann Evans), the Victorian novelist whose pages bloom with garden imagery, died on this day; her reflections on autumn and roses remain perennial favorites.

1928 William B. Arnett, Tulsa greenhouse president who helped shape floristry across four states and trained designers through the holidays, was born; his family remembered being “surrounded by flowers all our lives.”
