Botanical History On This Day
1866 Robert Dick, Scottish geologist, botanist, and baker of Thurso, died; a self-taught naturalist with a cherished herbarium of some 3,000 specimens and a memorial obelisk in Thurso Cemetery.
1889 The First White House Christmas Tree delighted “Baby McKee” as President Benjamin Harrison and First Lady Caroline decorated a gardener-set tree with candles, tinsel, and a shining star.
1936 Frances Garnet Wolseley, influential gardening author and educator, died; founder of the Glynde College for Lady Gardeners and author of Gardening for Women, she championed rigorous horticultural training for women.
