Botanical History On This Day

1761 Birthday of Kaspar Maria von Sternberg, Bohemian naturalist and “Father of Paleobotany.” Founder of Prague’s National Museum, he’s honored by the autumn-blooming genus Sternbergia—golden crocus look-alikes that love hot, well-drained spots and return bravely each fall.

1946 Birthday of Syd Barrett, guitarist and co-founder of Pink Floyd. After music, he lived quietly with paintbrushes and plants—an artist-gardener remembered in Cambridge by plans for a tranquil hospital garden featuring Syd on a bicycle, guitar in hand.

Unearthed Words

Today’s excerpt is from Onward and Upward in the Garden. Katharine S. White urges common sense when dealing with “poisonous plants”. Yes, learn to avoid true hazards, but don’t banish beauty indiscriminately. Monkshood, foxglove, larkspur, and lily-of-the-valley still belong—grown with knowledge and respect.

Today's Botanic Spark

1996 The Raleigh newspaper shared Lee Reich’s winter game: identifying trees by their bark, buds, and branches.

In his tips, opposite vs. alternate buds narrow the field; birches taste of wintergreen; walnuts show chambered pith; oaks and beeches keep papery skirts of leaves.
