Botanical History On This Day

1861 Birthday of Louise Imogen Guiney, American poet and essayist whose Boston years and later love of England colored her lyrical garden imagery—lilacs, May winds, and “fields of God”—that still feel fresh as new-mown hay.

1898 Birth of Vivi Laurent-Täckholm, Swedish botanist and children’s author. Her WWII-era flower club popularized houseplants like pothos and “Swedish ivy” (*Plectranthus australis*), turning bright windowsills into beginner-friendly botany labs.

Unearthed Words

Today’s excerpt is from Beth Chatto’s Garden Notebook. Writing plant portraits that outlast photographs, Beth Chatto recalls crafting irresistible catalog descriptions—radio-play vividness over glossy pictures—and reading great gardeners late into the night.

Today's Botanic Spark

1927 Anniversary of the death of Frank Lebby Stanton, Southern lyricist whose verses, like roses, balance sweetness with thorns—none more beloved by gardeners than his epitaph’s refrain: life’s pricks are real, but “ain’t the roses sweet?”
